Joe Toby Gutierrez Sr.

Joe Toby Gutierrez, Sr., age 76, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday August 12, 2026. He was born December 26, 1949, in Chilili, New Mexico, a son to Otilla Gutierrez. ‍

Joe was preceded in death by his mother Otilla Gutierrez, grandparents Esias and Sophia Gutierrez, son Anthony Gutierrez and grandson Briton Young.

A proud public servant, he retired from the City of Albuquerque after a distinguished 27‑year career. He served as Major for the Bernalillo County Detention Center, where he was known for his leadership, integrity, and dedication to the safety and wellbeing of both staff and inmates. His commitment to service and community left a lasting impact on all who worked alongside him.

Joe is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Joe Toby Gutierrez, Jr. and Jason Garcia (Belle) two daughters and two sons-in-law, Cassandra Gutierrez (Joaquin Rodriguez) and Destiny Gutierrez (Gabriel A. Chavez); two grandchildren Brooklynn Garcia and Ashton Garcia; and one sister and brother-in-law Maria Perea (Robert). He also leaves many other family members and friends who will sadly miss him.

‍A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, October 4, 2026, at Albuquerque Three Angels SDA Church located at 10750 Sunset Gardens Rd SW, Albuquerque, NM 8712. A reception to follow at the church gym.
