Obituary for Polly Sisneros de la Serna
June 22, 1931 – April 10, 2026
Born asleep, on the summer solstice June 22, 1931, in Scholle, NM, Polly (Pauline, Pole, Paublita) left this world also in a peaceful, comfortable sleep on April 10, 2026. Growing up on the family’s homestead near Abo, NM helping her dad, Canuto Montoya Sisneros (d.: 1978), and mom, Reyes de la Serna Sisneros (d.: 1997). The family dry farmed frijoles, pumpkins, squash, potatoes, and caña, plus raised goats, donkeys, horses, chickens, and a few cattle/sheep. With a wholesome upbringing such as that, a foundation was laid for a long life of health, which she and her sisters all had. All her four beloved sisters and 3 brothers-in-law preceded her in death: Rose, and husband, Juanito Saiz from San Acacia, NM; Josefita and husband Boleslo Perea, from Torreón, NM, Alicia and husband Ernesto Padilla from Abó, NM; and her dear baby sister Viviana Sisneros, who died in infancy. Polly’s husband Josė Mauricio Gutiérrez, (preceded in death) and the father of her four children. Second husband, Andrés Gonzales, (preceded in death), both Veterans. Polly was the last living child/descendant of her parents, which is hard to bear, but we imagine all who are awaiting her with open arms, greeting her with aquel cariño inolvidable - un amor eterno…. a love that is alive in us all, today, the next generations.
Polly graduated from Mountainair High School, State Beauty School after high school and many years later attended TVI and the University of Alburquerque to earn a bilingual educational aide certificate. Polly went on to work at Sunbell Southwest Jewelers, the New Mexico Public School Systems in Albuquerque and Estancia in their bilingual and ESL programs. In addition, she was a community volunteer for the Girl Scouts USA; Holy Rosary and St. Bernadette church choir, Catechism teacher, and worked many years as a voting poll worker. Polly brought the Baile de Los Comanches, to San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Westgate Heights. Polly was an accomplished poet who won many awards for her work and a family historian and genealogist. As her children, we respect and take pride in all her community service and her never ending love of genealogy. We have continued to honor her by doing the same
Mom and Dad raised four surviving children: Morris R. Gutiérrez (and late wife, Geraldine Armenta of Tijeras), Dr. Ana Malinalli X Gutiérrez Sisneros (and late husband, Roberto Mora of Chililí); Norbert R. Gutiérrez; and Ava M. Gutiérrez. Polly is survived by 5 nietos queridos, Aysha Gutiérrez-Mora, Martín Gutiérrez, Gabriel Gutiérrez, Michael Gutiérrez, Luís X. Gutiérrez-Rael (wife Jessica Rael). Her 5 precious great grandchildren Jaiden and Cloé Gutiérrez; Luciana and Viviana Mora-Romero, and Isabelle Grace Rael.
We give special recognition and thanks for the excellent care provided for our mother to George and Irene Lopez; Genney’s Senior Care Assisted Living home staff and caregivers, InnovAge NM PACE Program and its supportive staff; numerous compadres, nephews, primos, nieces, hijados, stepchildren & friends who visited her.
